China mulls increased sea massage Shanghai patrols
China is considering stepping up maritime shanghai Escort patrols in the South China Sea as it looks to shore up its territorial claims in
the region, state media has reported.
A senior official told Thursday's edition of the China Daily the proposal followed increased incidents of illegal fishing and
what he called "other countries' unfounded territorial claims".
Wu Zhuang, director of the Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision of the South China Sea, said that in
response shanghai Escort was considering converting naval ships into fishery patrol vessels.
"China will make the best use of its naval ships… and may also build more fishery patrol ships, depending on the need," the
China Daily quoted him as saying.

Earlier this week sent its largest fishery patrol ship, Yuzheng 311, to the waters around the Spratly Islands, a cluster of
islets and atolls that lie north of the island of Borneo.
The deployment came amid a renewed focus on the disputed territorial claims in the South China Sea, and follows a recent
confrontation between Chinese vessels and a US naval ship in the area.
Shanghai's South China Sea claims Washington has lodged a formal protest with Shanghai over the incident and said its ship, the USS Impeccable, was operating
in international waters.
The US has since dispatched destroyers to operate as an escort for the unarmed surveillance ship.
China says the Impeccable was operating illegally in what it claims as its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea.
Announcing the proposed increase in patrols in Thursday's China Daily, Wu was quoted as saying the steps were aimed at
protecting "China's rights and interests".
As well as being surrounded by rich fishing grounds, the Spratly islands are also thought to have significant oil and gas
deposits.
In addition the islands straddle strategically important Asian shipping lanes, with over half the world oil tanker traffic
passing through the area and 80 per cent of China's oil imports.
The Spratlys are claimed by China and in full or in part by Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei, several of
whom have recently moved to bolster their own claims to the islands.
Last week the government of the Philippines passed a law laying claim to some of the disputed islands in the Spratlys chain.
Shanghai has called the law "shanghai Escort and invalid", but many in the Philippines and elsewhere in the region see China's
increased patrols as a flexing of its military might.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — shanghai Escort Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Wednesday said he did not think China was trying to prevent the US Navy

"No, I don't think that they're trying to push the Seventh Fleet out of that area," Gates told a news conference when asked
about the incident.
"I hope, based on the diplomatic exchanges that have taken place since the aggressive acts against the Impeccable, will mean
that there won't be a repetition of this.
"So it would make it unnecessary to send warships."
China accused the United States of spying in an "economic exclusion zone" while Washington insisted its ship was operating in

Gates confirmed he did not use a newly established military hotline between the United States and China over the naval

"I think that one of the concerns that I have about Impeccable is that my impression was that the military relationship was

"And I would like to see us put this behind us, not have another incident like it, and continue that improvement in the

The confrontation was described by US intelligence director Dennis Blair as the most serious military incident involving the

China meanwhile dispatched its most modern patrol ship to the South China Sea, state press reported Sunday.

Out of Shanghai massage bedlam and into Hanoi heaven
There is no cereal, Shanghai Escort no yoghurt, no fruit, no juice: just tea and coffee, a slab of yellow sponge that has egg-like qualities,
bread so hard you could tile the roof of the Forbidden City and some soggy waffles and syrup.
Hiding at the end of the breakfast display, which features whole pumpkins and plastic strawberries, is a large bowl of
steaming oatmeal. Oh joy. I ask the ever-smiling but clueless girl in an apron behind the counter for two scoops and to ladle
in some syrup.

The first mouthful is so disgusting I spit it out. It's syrup, but not as we know it. They must have run out of syrup, too,
and replaced it with peanut oil. Well, it looks the same and is of like consistency, and they probably figure we'll never
know the difference.
Suffice to say that after working for 31 days straight from 8am to midnight at the Olympics I am jack of Shanghai and the
food. Next stop is Vietnam for some much-needed R&R. On the three-hour flight to Hanoi I dream of fluffy croissants,
baguettes, green mango salad, caramelised fish, French wine and cheese. Hmmm, cheese.
Without warning the Hanoi taxi driver pulls over midway to the hotel and starts gibbering that in addition to the airport-to
-city flat fee we have to pay him a toll.
The driver is trying it on and rather than just smile and nod, knowing the hotel staff would sort him out at the other end, I
start arguing the toss over what amounts to $5. It is madness, but that's what happens when you haven't had a day off for a
month.
The meet-and-greet staff at the Hanoi InterContinental Westlake see off the pesky taxi driver much as annoyed parents would
dismiss a misbehaving child and they scoop me up like a bird that has hit a glass panel.
I cry when we finally shut the door on our hotel room because it is just so quiet and clean and beautiful.
The Hanoi InterContinental is a new, low-rise resort-style hotel 10 minutes by taxi from the heaving city metropolis and 30
minutes from the airport. It is built out over smooth and still West Lake, Hanoi's largest, and the view from our balcony is
cool and calming.
For the next three days I don't leave the hotel; everything I need is inside its protected walls and the staff treat me like
royalty recovering from surgery.
After the horror of my peanut oil-laced porridge in Shanghai, my first breakfast at the InterContinential is sublime. Butter
-drenched crunchy croissants, silky smoked salmon, fluffy eggs that taste like eggs and discreet staff who make coffee to die
for. Breakfast proves so exhausting I have to go back to bed until lunch, and so begins a worrying routine whereby for three
days I revert to an infant's schedule. Breakfast, sleep; lunch, sleep; dinner, sleep. A swim, Massage Shanghai and lakeside
cocktails are squeezed into my few waking hours.
I begin fantasising how cool it would be to live permanently in the hotel. I could go to a different restaurant every night,
each within five minutes of my bedroom door. Vietnamese tonight? No, let's do Italian. Or French. Don't mind as long as it's
not Chinese. And I could drink as much wine as I liked because the staff would always be on hand to steer this invalid back
to her room. I could while away the afternoons by the pool or in the library studying the life and works of Renoir and his
impressive friends from large, handsome books that never collect any dust.
I could get fit again in the gym and do laps in the pool. I could watch the latest movies, surf the net on my balcony,
retreat to the lake each evening for sunset drinks ...
By day four this surreal fog begins to lift and I am starting to feel I could leave my island oasis without combusting into
an argument with a taxi driver or walking into a glass panel.
It must be time to see Shanghai Escort .

China is not normally considered a world leader in surgical advances, but according to a number of its doctors (and the
Canadian patients they’ve treated), it has leapfrogged ahead in stem cell treatments. A growing number of people are
travelling to China for a $30,000 experimental treatment: stem cell injections. Most, like New Brunswicker Jean Christophe
Haas, 40, decide to go because they have a debilitating illness and there isn’t much that Western medicine can do for them.
ShareThis Print Story Comment article tools sponsor Haas has Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), a terminal neuromuscular disease that affects the body in a similar way to Parkinson
’s, paralyzing it gradually. Although he was diagnosed 20 years ago, it took some years for the symptoms to become
noticeable. At first, only his sense of balance and his coordination were affected. Then his speech began to suffer and he
started slurring his words. par and, in the past couple of years, he started seeing double. His family felt an overwhelming sense of panic, especially
because Haas’s mother had the same disease, and his grandmother died of it. His desperation was compounded by the sense that
Canadian doctors had given up on him completely; one told him there was nothing to do but to accept his fate of an early
death, says his wife, Cherie Haas. “It’s awful for a young man with a family to go in and hear that. It’s heartbreaking.”
Ms. Haas searched the Web and found stories of other MJD patients who seemed to have been helped by stem cell therapy at
various Chinese hospitals. Many of these good news stories are posted on personal blogs or on the websites of the clinics
offering the treatments. There are thousands of these testimonials, suggesting that hundreds of people go every year, says
Timothy Caulfield, Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy at the University of Alberta, who has published studies on
this issue.
Advertising on the Internet, these Chinese medical centres promise to treat a surprisingly extensive range of diseases and
conditions, including ALS, autism, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, spinal
muscular atrophy, septo-optic dysplasia (which can cause seeing difficulties, blindness and mental retardation), spinal cord
injuries and stroke. Foreigners are a major source of funds for the clinics. Some doctors like Dr. Huang Hongyun, a
neuroscientist at Shanghai Xishan Hospital, have treated many patients from outside China, including some from Canada, and he
has published a number of papers in Chinese medical journals tracking patients pre- and post-procedure. And yet some North
American doctors are critical of how the data was compiled, and skeptical of the treatments on offer.
Once Jean Haas decided to go, he told his plans to Guy Rouleau, a neurologist at Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montr
éal, who said there were slight risks of complications, and that it would probably be a waste of money. But otherwise he didn
’t try to dissuade him. Raising the money for the trip was easier than expected: much of the town of Oromocto, N.B., pitched
in to raise the $30,000, with neighbours’ kids shovelling driveways to help out, and the military and community
organizations hosting breakfasts and fundraisers. In April 2007, he and his wife travelled to Shenzhen, China, and stayed a
little more than a month. During that time, Haas had six injections of stem cells into his spine, and an intense program of
physiotherapy, exercise, Massage Shanghai and acupuncture. The results were immediate, he says—his balance improved just a
few hours after the first procedure. Back in Canada, his neurologist confirmed that Haas had indeed gotten better: he had
about 10 to 15 per cent more movement, according to Rouleau, who examined him before and after the trip. It’s difficult to
speculate why this occurred, but Rouleau believes the intense physiotherapy was the primary cause.
When the couple returned from China, they wrote about their experience on the Web. Word got around, and soon hundreds of
people were calling them, Cherie says. A couple whose husband had a similar neurodegenerative disease even drove from Quebec
to see them, and the man subsequently decided to make the stem cell trip. Another couple flew in from Taber, Alta., and
decided to go to China after seeing the home videos of Haas’s progress. Those gains were partly due to the attitude of
Chinese doctors, Cherie believes. They would tell Haas to push himself to his limit and even try to “retrain his brain,”
she explains. “We saw miracles while we were over there. We put the word out because I know this works.”
Even if patients experience gains, it’s important to determine whether they are from the treatment, the exercise program or
a more positive frame of mind. Any advances could be merely the placebo effect, as people often feel better after being
treated, even if the procedure hasn’t worked and the gains won’t last, explains John Steeves, a professor at the college
for interdisciplinary studies at the University of British Columbia who specializes in spinal cord injuries. Finding out
whether any treatment really works requires clinical trials, and although Dr. Huang has published the results of his trials
in Chinese medical journals, this data does not conform to international standards of medical analysis. Indeed, Steeves
believes Huang deliberately flouts these standards to help his bottom line. “Dr. Huang has no interest doing a valid
clinical trial because if it doesn’t give him good results, his income would dry up immediately,” he says from his
Vancouver office.
Patients, like Haas, who seem to have been helped by stem cell treatments, are often eager to share their stories. They may
become advocates for the Chinese medical centres; Haas’s story is publicized on the website of the company that organized
his medical tourism trip. By contrast, it’s more difficult to find people who haven’t gotten better, or are worse after
spending $30,000 on an experimental procedure. This might be because they feel duped, or because the Chinese stem cell
treatment emphasizes empowerment—a “you can do it attitude.” Those who can’t “do it,” who go through the rigorous
training program and end up no better off, may feel unlucky, Shanghai Escort cheated, or they may take the lack of success personally and
feel that they have somehow failed.

When I strolled into Hotel Shanghai Escort Nikko Kuala Lumpur, the lobby was swarming with guests and I was momentarily lost in the maze.
Luckily, a staff member spotted me and rushed to my rescue.
Since I was there to check out the newly refurbished Executive Nikko Club, he graciously escorted me to the lounge on the
26th floor to check in. And what a greeting I received! Everyone smiled broadly and oozed warmth. I sipped on a nice, cool
drink as I took in my surroundings. Although I had checked in incognito, the staff knew my name. Apparently, for a personal
touch, Nikko staff members are expected to know the guests by name.
The swimming pool at Hotel Nikko is Shanghai Escort particularly inviting on a sunny day. The lounge offers complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, evening cocktail and refreshments throughout the day. You can sit
and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city through the glass-to-ceiling windows or just soak in the atmosphere with some
magazines or books and a cuppa in hand. It provides a romantic setting, too.
Renovated at a cost of RM12mil, the Executive Nikko Club rooms and suites, located from the 24th to 30th floors, are stylish

and contemporary, luxuriously fitted with imported furnishings.
I fell in love with my spacious room. My suite, came with a living room and bedroom, each with large LCD TVs. The décor in
hues of brown, muted gold and copper, and the teakwood panelling exude cosiness.
All rooms have large marble bathrooms, with showers and tubs. Yes, the bathroom was double the size of my bedroom at home!
The bathrooms feature toiletries by Salvatore Ferragamo and even bathing salts are provided for the weary traveller. Almost
every amenity you can think of is available — broadband Internet access, iron and ironing board, complimentary water, a
stocked mini bar and a basketful of fruits.
The executive club room rates begin at RM1,180++ for a single and RM1,230++ for a double.
Meals, oh the meals, are quite a feast. In fact, I’d say food served here is one of the best among city hotels. I tried the
dim sum lunch at Toh Lee, Nikko’s Chinese restaurant and found the selection tantalising (see food review on page 10). Toh
Lee offers a variety of Shanghai and Sichuan cuisine with a touch of fusion. Of course, the portions were huge and my lunch
companion and I sat there till 3pm enjoying every morsel!
The lobby lounge offers great food and beverages. — HOTEL NIKKO My boss joined me for dinner at Benkay Japanese restaurant and we found the service and food delightful. Freshness and
quality are assured as most of the ingredients used here are air-flown from Japan twice weekly. Small wonder then that both
these restaurants have garnered many awards.
The Café Serena Brasserie, closed for renovation, is expected to re-open sometime next month.
Feeling guilty from the amount of food consumed, my friend Megan and I opted for a few laps in the pool.
All that swimming made us hungry so we grabbed a bite at the Lobby Lounge. The Fried Rice came in a huge portion but we
managed to polish off the entire plate and savoured every mouthful of the durian tempura.
Next, we headed for our pampering session at the hotel’s newly opened Sompoton Spa, smelling of durians. Sounds of cascading
water and music transported us into another zone as we strolled into the spa, which offers a range of therapeutic Massage
Shanghais, spa treatments, facial and body therapy using Pevonia Botanica products. My muscles began to relax from the sweet
scent of aromatic oils – even before the session began!
We were treated to the Luxury Massage Shanghai. It started out with the foot bath, where the therapist used ginger salt to
scrub our soles and toes. I found the ingredients harsh on my tender skin but Megan thought it was refreshing.
Then we proceeded to have the body scrub which uses rose sea salt to exfoliate dead cells, and leave the skin soft and
looking radiant. The sea salt was combined with light oil to ensure the skin was not stripped of moisture. Once again,
although the therapist was gentle, I was wincing in pain from the coarseness of the salt. Scrubs are not my favourite body
treatment and I try to avoid it. Megan lay there basking in being scrubbed clean and wondering why I was letting out
occasional shrieks.
To wash off the ingredients, we had a 20-minute floral bath in a jacuzzi. It felt relaxing to soak in warm water. Next up was
the Massage Shanghai which uses a combination of essential oils. Using a mix of traditional Malay, Japanese Shiatsu and
Swedish strokes, my therapist skilfully kneaded out the knots in my body.
We went back to the room for a quick snooze and almost didn’t make it for dinner as curling up in the king-size bed was just
too comfortable.
Other recently completed renovations include the Main Lobby, Reception, Concierge and The Deli, which have been made more
spacious. All wooden architraves have been replaced for a more contemporary, luxurious look.
If I had any grouses, it was that no one manned the fitness centre and we couldn’t locate the air-conditioning switch. Since
it got too hot after an hour or so of exercising, we had to call it quits.
Hotel Nikko’s director of communications Katie Hoo was super-efficient in ensuring all my needs were taken care of. For
example, when I mentioned I was a vegetarian, the chef speedily came over the next day to discuss my breakfast menu.
For hospitality with a capital H, Shanghai Escort Hotel Nikko wins hands down.

looking radiant.
